Exhibition | Fringe Projects 2019

Three site-responsive interventions convey this year’s series, all of which feature artists with Caribbean roots: Paul Anthony Smith (Jamaican, based in New York) showcases three billboard projects, executed in his signature “picotage” style, exploring hybridity of place, people, and history; Joiri Minaya (Dominican-American, based in New York) cloaks the statues of Ponce de Leon at the Torch of Friendship and Christopher Columbus behind the Bayfront Park Amphitheatre in her allegorical tropical patterned prints; and Angel Garcia (Cuban-American, based in Los Angeles) screens their farcical and hypnotic film Psychic Dick from a commercial storefront. The series is overseen by Deborah Lehman Di Capua, deputy director and associate curator, and advised by Amanda Sanfilippo.
